Algorand Centre of Excellence

on Sustainability Informatics

for the Pacific

ACE-SIP (Algorand Centre of Excellence on Sustainability Informatics for the Pacific), funded by Algorand Foundation under the competitive Algorand Centres of Excellence (ACE) Program, is the only Australian ACE among the 10 winners in the world. It is a multi-university team advancing the state-of-the-art Algorand blockchain technology, the world’s most powerful and sustainable blockchain, from research and education to provide sustainability in the Pacific Region. Led by Monash University in Australia, the team benefits from the expertise of researchers from other universities including University of Queensland (Australia), University of Sydney (Australia), Swinburne University of Technology (Australia), Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong), University of Fiji (Fiji), University of the South Pacific (Fiji) and two research institutes the Oceania Cyber Security Centre (Australia) and the Climateworks Centre (Australia and Indonesia).

About

Our ACE aims to make a global impact on sustainable development, particularly in the Pacific.

We will adopt an integrated approach focused on environmental sustainability (climate change, energy and water), governmental sustainability (protection, streamlined processes and waste reduction) and social and community sustainability (supply chains, real estate, Fintech and culture).

Our efforts will work on preserving natural resources and environmental quality, driving a more protected and optimised government model, and supporting the community socially, economically and culturally. Only in this holistic way can we deliver the outcomes and long-term viability we seek.

Our ACE activities will fall within three co-related clusters – research, education and community.

With research, we will drive cutting-edge blockchain technologies while ensuring they are ethically embedded into the lives and practices of people and communities.

Our education will equip secondary, tertiary and vocational students, enterprise and government leaders, educators and careers coordinators with the expertise and tools to create a diverse, high-calibre and connected workforce and curricula.

It will transform the way people learn about blockchain and cryptocurrency with research-informed resources that focus training through gamification, innovative and collaborative learning, and data analytics. Enterprises will undertake industry immersions and career-focused initiatives to produce blockchain-capable, work-ready professionals.

Finally, the Community cluster will connect with the Algorand community and provide support, opportunities and resources enriched by the other clusters – ultimately resulting in self-sufficiency.

Putting it all together, Research supports Education by enabling empirically-informed curricula and pedagogy, and providing advice and support to the Community. Education engages with Research through learning analytics, providing an interactive platform for implementing enhanced learning outcomes. It also creates candidates and training opportunities to help the Community address global talent shortages in Algorand Blockchain. Supported by the other two clusters, Community empowers researchers and students to uphold sustainable development after the lifetime of this ACE.
